SECRETS OF SUCCESS

Everyone wants to learn the secrets of being successful in life. There are many people who have achieved success in this world. Success does not come to those who wait... and it does not wait for anyone to come to it. Most successful men have not achieved their destination by having some new talent or opportunity presented to them. They have developed the opportunity that was at hand. The difference between failure and success is doing things nearly right and doing a thing exactly right. Nobody is born a success, they create it. Success is not an accident or found in a lottery ticket, you need to create it. Knowing the secrets of success and correctly implementing them will certainly help one to achieve success in life.

What is success?

Success is achieving one’s chosen goal. The goals that one aspires for and has worked for, whatever they might be. It is favourable outcome of our endeavour. Ongoing string of accomplishments when put together, add up to a major obtainment in life, is known as success. Success has a different meaning for each one of us. The meaning of success comes in many forms, and many definitions. It all depends on what you are searching for in life. Success is a journey, not a destination, you have to move ahead. Climbing the ladder of success is like climbing a mountain. Every peak is a destination, and you climb one peak at a time. Reaching every destination is a challenge well met. A musician may see success as a number one hit, a doctor may see success as a surgery that went well, for a politician it may be attainment of power, and for a scientist, the invention or discovery of something new. It basically depends on the prospective of life you have.

Define success

Always remember you are your own captain of your ship. Meaning of success changes from person to person. Success does not come to you... you go to it. Each individual’s own definition of success will be influenced by the following factors;

Success is subject to individual interpretation based on upbringing, past experiences, role models, personal motivations and goals. Carefully contemplate your definition of success based on your values.

When you achieve success, it is sometimes measurable and sometimes not.

Very few people achieve success accidentally. Most people who achieve success first defined it then planned for it; they set a goal to achieve it.

One has to spend some time to critically analyze and decide accordingly his/her own definition of success. This will help to formulate the next course of actions to be drawn and followed to attain success. The word success is well defined by;

“S” for solo focus

“U” for unlocked imagination

“C” for crystal clear path

“C” for connection to the heart

“E” for extraordinary energy

“S” for skill set

“S” for stop at nothing

Secrets of successful people

The great successful men of the world have used their imagination... they think ahead and create their mental picture in all its details, filling in here, adding a little there, altering this a bit and that a bit, but steadily building-steadily building. Some of the secrets of highly successful people are;

1. Successful people are good at using their dominant skills in doing what they love to do and in what they really excel. They are good at evaluating their own strength and weakness and accordingly they built their own temple of success.

2. They tried to actualize their strength and minimize the effect of their weaknesses.

3. They have a clear vision and mission of what they want to do.

4. They are highly confident and never let setbacks and failures dent their confidence.

5. They have identified the power of subconscious mind. Conscious minds are clumsy and limited in capacity. Subconscious mind is much larger in potential and capability than the conscious mind. Successful persons know how to use it successfully to realize their goals and dreams.

6. They are highly consistent and believe in, “doing well is not enough, giving the best in each of the undertaking is more important”.

7. A goal well remembered is well achieved. Having created goals, successful people remain focused on them, and never doubting their ability to accomplish them.

8. The courage to take calculated risks is a big factor in their success.

Successful persons have three traits in common;

I. They know where they are.

II. They know where they want to be.

III. They have a plan for getting there.

You are your own success maker

The reasons why you are your own success makers can be summarized as follows;

You decide - the decision to achieve success has to be done by you. You make that conscious decisions based on your own evaluation and judgement. It is entirely up to you to define and decide what that success is.

You do - you are responsible to make the success happen for you, even though coaches are there and mentors are there. Their main role is restricted to guiding and motivating you in this regard. The perfect technique to achieve success has to be formulated by you only. You have to act upon your plan in order to achieve your success.

You prepare a plan - it is rightly told that, “failing to plan is planning to fail”. Some people who fail gives the excuse that they do not have the luck to succeed. You have to prepare the plan for achieving success in your own way.

You overcome the challenges - the top of the ladder is never crowded, but the road to success is full of challenges. These challenges have to be overcome by you only. You have to find out the solutions to these challenges and transforming these challenges to opportunities.

Phases of success

There are three phases of success;

1. Struggle phase

2. Achieved phase

3. Maintenance phase

Struggle phase is the time when you have not tested success. You do not know how to recognize what your heart desires, how to work towards fulfilling your dreams, and how to achieve your goal. This stage basically leads to most of the time frustration and finally accepting whatever comes on the way. This may lead you to drift from your goal. Careful attention must be given to finding out new and innovative techniques to motivate you and keep you going under the most adverse conditions. Gold attains its luster and purity only under intense heat and fire. So keep your head strong and have the courage and conviction to face all type of challenges that will come in this stage.

In the achieved stage you have achieved what you desired and have got what you wanted. This phase is very critical and must be handled delicately. You need to visualize the road ahead to your success. Once you are able to build your dreams, dream your desires and plan your goals around these reasons, then you will find and clearly see the road ahead. It will help you to pass from one success to another, because success is a journey, not a destination. There are some examples of people to hang on the success and forget to move the tempo of continuing the success factor further. It leads to no further development in their life.

In the maintenance phase, you have to learn how to transform your desires and dreams into realities. You have to find out what motivates you and this will be helpful to you to recover from the temporary lapses very fast.

Critical success factors

There are distinctively principles of success that must be followed if you have to achieve success in your life. It is proven that the majority of things do not matter, but what does matter is your attitude towards them. These attitudes or seeds begin in childhood and grow and develop into your adulthood. The steps to be followed or the secrets of success are as follows;

1. Single-mindedness

Single-mindedness is all powerful. When you connect to the source of all power, you can alter the pulls of the fate. Fate is your probable life path, that is, established related thoughts and belief about your reality. By setting priorities and concentrating singlemindedly, you can accomplish anything in life.

2. Will power

If you want to create anything, it is not enough to imagine. You must use your will power. Using the will is simply a matter of focusing your intent. The difference between the champion runner and the one who come second place is not so much a matter of leg power; rather it is higher amount of willful intent that wins the race. The more intent you are, the more you will succeed.

3. Purpose

Do things on purpose. When you allow yourself to act accordingly to your intentions and do things on purpose, you will find yourself getting more and more of what exactly it is you want. Keep your primary focus in mind and not lose track of what you want.

4. Focus

The secret of success is focus. It is the one secret that ties everything together. According to the law of attraction, what you focus on is what you get. The success of anything you do begins with focus. Focus is an act of will which is the faculty that rules everything. When you focus on the work at hand, you will start to thoughts about it that you can work on. You attract all the parts of the work together simply by using the power of focus. The lack of focus is the reason for failure. If you want to achieve maximum and fastest results, keep your eye on the ball. He who does not rule himself is not a success.

5. Persuasion

The secret of universe is the power of persuasion. It is about moving consciousness, and when one can move consciousness, he/ she can move anything in this universe. Persuasion is about changing the perception of people in order to change their reality. All successful persons are masters of persuasions.

6. Goal setting.

Clearly determine what the goal is. Be specific. Once you have defined what it means to achieve success for yourself, your next step is to set goals that will lead you to your definition of success. There are five golden rules of goal setting;

Make sure your goal is valuable

Make sure your goal is an absolute necessity

Achieving goal is a process, not just a result

Set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time bound)

Set goals in writing and make an action plan

7. Planning

Planning is an essential stepping stone to success. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail! Although in today’s fast moving world, change is the order of the day, this simple pearl of wisdom has stood the test of time. Planning is the process of putting together a blueprint to achieve your goals. Trying to achieve a goal without a plan, is like driving a car without a steering wheel, trying to get somewhere with no control of your direction. Planning is an ongoing process. A plan is like a map. When you follow a plan, you can always see how much you have progressed towards your project goal and how far you are from your destination. Planning is preparing a sequence of action steps to achieve some specific goal. If you do it effectively, you can reduce much the necessary time and effort of achieve the goal. To be effective, planning needs to take at several levels;

Strategic level - here you have to set the overall direction to achieve success by mapping out the medium to long term future of your success.

Operational level - planning at this level aims to ensure that the day-to-day activities you have identified as being essential to the successful operation are carried out effectively.

8. Take baby steps

To successfully start your plan, divide your goals into smaller workable steps. Make the first step the easiest to accomplish. This will build your confidence and give you an incentive to keep going.

9. Time management

Time is one of the most important resources for everyone, and sometimes most valuable. A sense of time can motivate, focus efforts, and get more done per hour. Successful time manage-ment is important for achieving success in time.

10. Use of systems

If you want to become successful in life, you must develop and use a system that enables you to produce the best result. One has to discover and refine particular ways of doing things that gets the best results. It is related to a particular way that works best for you every time you use it. The entire universe is a system of systems.

11. Discipline

One of the main reasons why people fail is that there is no discipline in their action. Disciplines ensure that you can be persistent, especially when faced with challenges.

12. Think big

Think big is an essential trait to achieve success. Thinking big is when you see in your mind’s eye a goal that is bigger than you are. Thinking big is having a dream and working at making that dream come true.

Conclusion

People generally search for the secrets of achieving success in their life. For achieving success some joins classes, and others opt for the path of hard work in to their lives. Though the definition and meaning of success varies from person to person, but still it is the dominant factor in our society. There is no place for unsuccessful persons or losers on this earth. We are the best creature of god on earth, and to live the life to the fullest, one must be successful in life. By following the above mentioned secrets one can achieve sure success in time, with the available resources and the surrounding conditions. Tomorrow never exists without the presence of today, but the wise person acts on very moment rather than today. It is never too late, start visualizing your form of success and act right now on the same. Wishing you the very best for your path to success.

MANAGING INTERVIEWS YOUR WAY

Significance of interview needs no elaboration. As Interviews are inevitable, we should prepare well to achieve our objective and climb up the ladder. At the outset, it is pertinent to mention that the major portion of the interview can well be managed your way. Management has become part and parcel of our life, any thing and every thing can be managed well if one’s approach is methodical. Let me assure you, if you plan your preparations systematically, do your homework properly, nothing can stop you to manage the outcome of interviews your way.

Endeavour has been made in this article to discuss some of the important aspects where candidates generally go wrong on aspects which are left out unprepared. I recently interviewed young graduates & postgraduates which has further sounded me to share my experience for the benefit of aspiring interviews.

Biodata/Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV)

The importance of preparing a bio data form or filling up application form carefully and meticulously can not be over emphasized. It must be remembered that questions in interviews flow from this document. It is very important to fill in all the columns carefully and not consider anyone of them as unimportant; even the minutest detail should be filled properly. The employer receives thousands of applications, your CV/resume should stand out/draw attention of the employer to be short listed for the interview. The following should be ensured :

Quality of paper should be good bond paper, avoid photostat paper.

There should be no spelling mistakes, get it checked by a second/third person.

Details should be clear & easy to read.

CV /resume should preferably be in one page, in any case not more than two pages.

It should be presented in such a manner that it gives brief overview of yourself, high-lights your main skills and personal attributes, gives your core areas of competence.

Resume/CV should preferably be forwarded under well drafted covering letter.

Most importantly it should motivate the reader to know more about you

Interview Call “Congratulat-ions” you have successfully crossed over initial hurdle in the selection process. Receipt of call letter indicates you have been short listed among hundreds/thousands of applicants on the basis of your qualifications/experience presented in your CV/resume. The real battle starts now, it has been experienced that there are generally gaps found at the time of interview in the skills/ experience projected and actual. One has to make all out endeavour to take account of each word mentioned in CV/Resume. For example if you have mentioned “You are adaptable to changing circumstances, you should be prepared to substantiate with situations/circumstances which confirm your above quality. One has to be very careful in preparing CV/resume. One has to put his best foot forward & prepare for the ensuing interview accordingly .It has been seen that most of the candidates go wrong due to their over reliance on their qualifications. It must be understood that one has been short listed on the basis of qualification, It is now time to perform. All those who have been short listed have almost equal or better qualifications. Your success in interview will depend on your performance, probably better performance than those having better qualifications.

Preliminary preparations

As soon as one receive the interview call one must start gathering information about the organization. The best way is to visit the web site of the organization, liaise with your colleagues/friends/acquain-tances in the same organization. It is always beneficial to visit the organization or write to them to obtain brochure containing requisite information. You are likely to perform better in the interview if you are well informed about the organization. You should be fully conversant with the organization, its products, its location, set up, turnover, work culture, problem areas if any, competitors. Any query about the Salary / entitlement of leave, terms and conditions should be found out prior to facing the interview. You should not keep these queries for the opportunity which you may get during the interview. It is advisable to ask some positive questions, such as about training opportunities/ career prospects.

The Inevitable

If one prepares well & adheres to the points enumerated above, one would definitely be facing the interviewers. It must always be remembered that inter-viewers try their best to make the interviews comfortable & relaxed so that necessary rapport is established between them. Interviewers can evaluate interviews properly only if candidates are at ease during the interview.

The purpose of interview is to find out your potential and abilities, keeping in view the organizations requirements.

The skills most organizations look for in their candidates are :

Team spirit.

Good communication skill.

Leadership & organizational capability.

Creativity & resourcefulness.

Adaptability & motivation.

Problem solving and analytical approach.

Mental alertness, clear & logical thinking.

Intellectual & moral Integrity.

Factual awareness.

Your conduct/Appearance

It has been rightly found out by researches that your image depends more than 90% on how you look and behave and balance on what you say. With the passage of time, people have become more and more unconventional or casual about dresses. One should avoid putting on loud dresses, ladies should avoid revealing dresses. To be on safer side, your attire should match with the dress culture prevailing in the organization.

One should reach the venue of the interview more than little earlier than the appointed time. One should take into consideration traffic jams and unforeseen delays. You should also take into account the time required to get your testimonial/certificates verified prior to interview. One should go through the interview call letter properly; at times place of interview is other than office premises.

Your entry and exits to the interview room should have desired impact, while entering, walk straight, head up, smiling. You should sit straight comfortably. You should keep your hands relaxed preferably in your lap. Woman should place her handbag on the floor next to her. Keeping eye contact with the interviewers is very important. Remember you exit is as important as your entry. You must thank the interviewers, smile and than leave. Your body language should continue to show enthusiasm for the entire period i.e. entry to exit.

Confronting interviewers

SWOT analysis is not properly done. One must carry out detailed analysis of one’s strengths & weaknesses & threats and opportunities in one’s field. There are number of books available which can be referred for the SWOT analysis.

Useful Tips

You should read news papers and minimum one magazine regularly. You may also listen to BBC for their detailed news. You should develop a habit to analyze the news and draw your own conclusions. In controversial matters it is better to be modest and not get sentimental on issues. You should be intelligent enough to avoid confrontation with interviewer.

You may carry a small brief case but do not carry casual bag or shopping bag.

You should carry copy of CV/ application form forwarded to the particular organization, should go through it in detail a day prior to your interview.

Do not initiate hand shake but do it positively in response to interviewer’s gesture.

When ever you are asked to tell about yourself, you should say, who you are and what you are interested in doing. (Mostly as per job requirement).

Use simple and short sentences to give your answers. Do not try to speak fast, be clear in your expressions. One can develop this habit with constant practice. Contents of the answer are more important than your language.

Do not give one word answer. Suppose you are asked “will you be able to adjust in new environment”?, Instead of answering “yes I will”, you should also supplement your answer with valid reason and short justification.

Do not try to memorise any answer, you should answer spontaneously. Memorized answers lack required impact.

Your achievements and favourable facts should be readily available; you should seek opportunity to show these during the interview.

If you do not know the answer it is better to admit the fact, instead of beating about the bush. You should know what the interviewer expects from you.

By now you must have understood the kind of preparation required to perform well in interviews. Your qualifications, appearance and initial impression alone are not enough in this competitive world, you have to demonstrate that “extra edge” to manage the outcome of interview your way.

Frequently Asked Interview Questions

1. Tell me about yourself:

The most often asked question in interviews. You need to have a short statement prepared in your mind. Be careful that it does not sound rehearsed. Limit it to work-related items unless instructed otherwise. Talk about things you have done and jobs you have held that relate to the position you are interviewing for. Start with the item farthest back and work up to the present.

2. Why did you leave your last job?

Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Never refer to a major problem with

management and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers or the organization. If you do, you will be the one looking bad. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason such as an opportunity, a chance to do something special or other forward-looking reasons.

3. What experience do you have in this field?

Speak about specifics that relate to the position you are applying for. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can.

4. Do you consider yourself successful?

You should always answer yes and briefly explain why. A good explanation is that you have set goals, and you have met some and are on track to achieve the others.

5. What do co-workers say about you?

Be prepared with a quote or two from co-workers. Either a specific statement or a

paraphrase will work. Jill Clark, a co-worker at Smith Company, always said I was the hardest workers she had ever known. It is as powerful as Jill having said it at the interview herself.

6. What do you know about this organization?

This question is one reason to do some research on the organization before the interview. Find out where they have been and where they are going. What are the current issues and who are the major players?

7. What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year?

Try to include improvement activities that relate to the job. A wide variety of activities can be mentioned as positive self-improvement. Have some good ones handy to mention.

8. Are you applying for other jobs?

Be honest but do not spend a lot of time in this area. Keep the focus on this job and what you can do for this organization. Anything else is a distraction.

9. Why do you want to work for this organization?

This may take some thought and certainly, should be based on the research you have done on the organization. Sincerity is extremely important here and will easily be sensed. Relate it to your long-term career goals.

10. Do you know anyone who works for us?

Be aware of the policy on relatives working for the organization. This can affect your answer even though they asked about friends not relatives. Be careful to mention a friend only if they are well thought of.

11. What kind of salary do you need?

A loaded question. A nasty little game that you will probably lose if you answer first. So, do not answer it. Instead, say something like, That's a tough question. Can you tell me the range for this position? In most cases, the interviewer, taken off guard, will tell you. If not, say that it can depend on the details of the job. Then give a wide range.

12. Are you a team player?

You are, of course, a team player. Be sure to have examples ready. Specifics that show you often perform for the good of the team rather than for yourself are good evidence of your team attitude. Do not brag, just say it in a matter-of-fact tone. This is a key point.

13. How long would you expect to work for us if hired?

Specifics here are not good. Something like this should work: I'd like it to be a long time. Or As long as we both feel I'm doing a good job.

14. Have you ever had to fire anyone? How did you feel about that?

This is serious. Do not make light of it or in any way seem like you like to fire people. At the same time, you will do it when it is the right thing to do. When it comes to the organization versus the individual who has created a harmful situation, you will protect the organization. Remember firing is not the same as layoff or reduction in force.

15. What is your philosophy towards work?

The interviewer is not looking for a long or flowery dissertation here. Do you have strong feelings that the job gets done? Yes. That's the type of answer that works best here. Short and positive, showing a benefit to the organization.

16. If you had enough money to retire right now, would you?

Answer yes if you would. But since you need to work, this is the type of work you prefer. Do not say yes if you do not mean it.

17. Have you ever been asked to leave a position?

If you have not, say no. If you have, be honest, brief and avoid saying negative things about the people or organization involved.

18. Explain how you would be an asset to this organization

You should be anxious for this question. It gives you a chance to highlight your best points as they relate to the position being discussed. Give a little advance thought to this relationship.

19. Why should we hire you?

Point out how your assets meet what the organization needs. Do not mention any other candidates to make a comparison.

20. Tell me about a suggestion you have made

Have a good one ready. Be sure and use a suggestion that was accepted and was then considered successful. One related to the type of work applied for is a real plus.

21. What irritates you about co-workers?

This is a trap question. Think real hard but fail to come up with anything that irritates you. A short statement that you seem to get along with folks is great.

22. What is your greatest strength?
